Never say ‘impossible’ – say ‘I’m possible’.

Hello everyone, I am Janel Fung. It is with great pleasure to introduce myself to you as Head Girl of 2024.

Firstly, on behalf of the College, I would like to say a huge thank you to Ella, Head Girl of 2023, for all her time and commitment to the role alongside wishing her best of luck with her A Level exams.

During my time at St. Francis’, I have witnessed two Head Girl elections and the courage and confidence they had on stage during the election process was inspiring. Though at the time it felt incredibly unrealistic, I had been determined to go for the position of Head Girl. So, when Mr. Nichols announced that I had achieved this goal, I’ll admit that I was not emotionally prepared for that epic and special moment. I was so nervous, the voices in my head were telling me: ‘Let’s be realistic, would my English as a second language be an obstacle for me in becoming a brilliant Head Girl? Do I know enough about the school to be Head Girl?’

However, after talking to Ella and Heather, Head Girl of 2022, they reassured me, reminding me that practice makes perfect. The role of Head Girl is not about comparing and doing a better job than the previous Head Girls. It is an opportunity to be myself, a role to make good use of my strengths and drive the school forward. Never say ‘impossible’, but ‘I’m possible’. As I stepped into this role, I was filled with an overwhelming sense of responsibility, but then also determination and excitement for the journey ahead.

A little about myself; I study Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Philosophy & Ethics at A Level. I aspire to study medicine at university and become a caring doctor in the future. I also play the piano and individual sports like swimming and cross-country, which have always been a passion of mine. It is the experiences of failures, such as being disqualified in swimming competitions or losing the plot on stage during piano competitions, that have shaped who I am today, building up my determination, resilience, and appreciation for my skills and talents. They have allowed me to develop essential life skills, such as time-management and organization to achieve work-life balance.

I hope I can transfer and use these skills to aid me in my role as Head Girl. I want to be approachable, someone who you can voice your interests to, a friend who you trust and feel comfortable with. So, please do come to me whenever you have any concerns, I am more than happy to be your listener and take your words on board!

Once again, thank you for entrusting me with the privilege of serving as Head Girl. I am truly honoured to represent every one of you, and I am committed to working tirelessly to make this academic year one of growth, success, and unforgettable memories for us all.

Remember, when I say Head Girl, I mean your Head Girl.

With warmest regards

Janel
