Ms Katy Kirk, Head of Film & Media

Accreditations

Our Head of Film and Media holds a degree in English and American Literature & Film from Brunel University and completed her PGCE at Goldsmith’s College, University of London in 2009. Before entering teaching, she worked as an Arts Administrator for a music charity, coordinating concerts at prestigious venues including BBC Maida Vale, Tate Liverpool, and Wigmore Hall, while running projects enabling young people to create music for professional musicians.

Since 2009, she has taught in secondary schools across London, Buckinghamshire, Nottingham, Derbyshire, Cambridgeshire, and Hertfordshire. An avid film enthusiast, she brings genuine passion to her teaching and celebrates the diverse texts that engage students in meaningful learning. She has served as an examiner for both AQA in English Language and Eduqas in Film Studies since 2018.

Outside the classroom, she plays the trumpet in the Hitchin Light Orchestra; enjoys spending time outdoors; and exploring art and culture in cities around the world.

Subject Overview

A GCSE Media Studies focuses on a range of contemporary and historical media products. This specification will allow learners to study the media in an academic context and apply the knowledge and understanding gained in the process of creating their own media production.

The aims of this qualification are to enable students to:

  • demonstrate skills of enquiry, critical thinking, decision-making and analysis.
  • acquire knowledge and understanding of a range of important media issues.
  • develop appreciation and critical understanding of the media and their role both historically and currently in society, culture and politics.
  • understand and apply specialist subject-specific terminology to analyse and compare media products and the contexts in which they are produced and consumed in order to make informed arguments, reach substantiated judgements and draw conclusions about media issues.
  • appreciate how theoretical understanding supports practice and practice supports theoretical understanding.
  • develop practical skills by providing opportunities for creative media production. 

Course Content - There are two examinations along with a Non-Examination Assessment piece

Paper 1: Television and promoting media 70 marks 35%

This focuses on an in-depth study of a television product, allowing students to showcase their understanding of the theoretical framework. The promoting media element of the paper deals with the marketing and advertising, allowing students to explore the business side of media.

Paper 2: Music and news 70 marks 35%

In this component, learners will engage with an in-depth study of a magazine along with music videos and radio broadcasts/advertising. The news element of this paper covers online, social and participatory media. In both sections of these papers, students will apply their knowledge of the theoretical framework to analyse the relevant products.

NEA: Creating Media 30 marks 30%

Learners will create media products through applying knowledge and understanding of media language and media representations from the theoretical framework to express and communicate meaning to an intended audience.

Extra-curricular

Attendance of film events as well as the customary screenings of the set pieces being shown at the college.
