HRH The Duke of Edinburgh

HRH The Duke of Edinburgh

We are greatly saddened to hear of the loss of His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh, and our thoughts are with his family.

As the founder of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh transformed how millions of young people saw themselves and saw the world around them. Launched in 1956, the DofE sparks self-belief and self-discovery. It helps young people realise they can shape the world – and gives them the skills to do just that.

At St. Francis’ College Colonel Neville Blair and his wife Daisy started DofE as they looked after the boarders in the late 1970s. Ms Roberts took over leading the programme in 1986. The school ran two Gold explorations (similar to expeditions) to Bermuda in the late 80's.

“When I have been to St. James Palace to see girls presented with their Gold award I was always struck how good HRH Prince Philip was with the young people and always got them talking and made them feel special. It is a great award which can push the girls outside their comfort zone but always very pleased when they achieve their award.” Ms Roberts.
