Senior - Mathematics

Today, more than ever before, we live in a world that is governed and ruled by Maths. With this in mind the aim of the Maths department is to provide the best possible education for each girl; allowing each student to feel confident in her mathematical ability; achieve her full potential; be prepared for the world after school and gain satisfaction and enjoyment from her work.

In lessons girls are encouraged to question, to work independently on mastering techniques, to work in pairs or groups to solve problems and so develop their mathematical reasoning, communication and team working skills. We consciously aim to stimulate the girl’s intellectual curiosity and aspire for them to find Maths rewarding. We participate in national Mathematics competitions and other mathematical enrichment activities designed to spark students’ interest in Mathematics and allow them to tackle questions beyond the confines of the syllabus.

A brief overview of the curriculum

The girls are placed into ability sets from years 7 to 11; this means the work can be clearly directed at the appropriate level of ability for each student allowing them to flourish and blossom. The girls are tested frequently throughout the year and the setting reviewed regularly. We use the CGP textbooks supplemented with numerous other resources. The girls are prepared for the Edexcel (9-1) GCSE with the top set in Year 11 also taking the AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Mathematics.

A level Mathematics is a very popular subject at St Francis’, it being studied by well over half of the Sixth Form. We follow the Edexcel modular A level course studying Core Mathematics and Statistics. We also offer A level Further Mathematics where there is the opportunity to study Mechanics and Decision Maths.
