We were privileged to welcome to St. Francis’ College today Dame Susan Jocelyn Bell Burnell, DBE FRS FRSE FRAS FinstP. Dame Jocelyn is an astrophysicist from Northern Ireland who, as a postgraduate student, discovered the first radio pulsars in 1967. The discovery enabled scientists to make advances in astrophysics.

In her inspiring talk to students and staff she described her life growing up and the challenges she faced at school and in her career. She described how she felt when she was not acknowledged for her Nobel Prize winning discovery of pulsars, but has since understood that the Nobel may have limited further awards and accolades.
